In Californication Season 2, Hank Moody, played by David Duchovny, continues to make a mess of his life. Or, if you look at it another way, he continues to live it exactly as he always has and now suffers the consequences as a forty-something parent of a teen does. Spoilers ahead.

So far I have watched half of season two courtesy of Netflix. So my commentary will include only references to those episodes.

I continue to loath Madeline Zima’s character Mia, who imho brings only smarminess to the show, which is quite possibly the point. I just don’t enjoy her character. She is a nasty, manipulative, oversexed teen. How obvious. And any adult with any sense whatsoever would stay far, far away from her. And the Hank character says as much – why is she here, why do we need her attitude?

Somebody in a seat of power must like Zima; because Karen broke up with Mia’s father at the end of season one, which could have effectively terminated the Mia relationship. I really wish it had. There are plenty of female characters on the show. Do we need her?

Hank’s dick continues to get him into trouble. I say it flatly that way, because it seems to go with the theme. He goes down on a strange woman. Which seems quite humorous. I mean, really, if Karen didn’t want to shag him post-vasectomy, in a strange house, how would he get turned around and end up in the wrong dark room with a strange naked woman?

I don’t dislike the Karen character. I just think she isn’t always honest with herself about the fact that she loves Hank as the jerk that he is, and not some imaginary other person who can keep it in his pants. If he didn’t get himself featured on Defamer every now and then; he wouldn’t be Hank.

Hank is the probable father of a child created in an episode during season one. This bit of information is uncovered during a dinner party. Note to Hank: See, once you have a cheap screw with somebody, you’re supposed to throw them away. That’s why it’s called a one night stand – because it is only supposed to last one night. Which pretty much sums up why I think Hank and Karen are so dysfunctional, because they can’t throw anything away, even ex-lovers.

Becca gets a boyfriend. And Hank acts the way you would imagine a hound-dog would when a boy gets near his daughter. It’s quite funny.

Hank is working in this season, not for the Dialtone, Mia’s father and Karen’s former fiance. And that brings another interesting set of problems and strange people into the show.

Charlie and Marcie Runkle continue to be themselves. My favorite line from Marcie is “I wax hairy tacos.”

It’s so wrong. I just can’t look away.

Stupid Human Tricks

For this weeks stupid human tricks, I performed tasks all day long. And none of them were what I would have liked to have been doing. And most were long overdue.

Do ordinary households have conversations such as these?

Him: Hi. How are you?

Me: Good. Relatively, unproductive. No, not really, spent all day trying to stay out of jail. Not jail actually, but you know, the bureaucratic bullshit that haunts grown-ups who made asses of themselves in their twenties so we would not be asses now. But now, oh shit, is there a warrant for my arrest in New Jersey!?

You?

Him: Err, still sick. Tired.

I’m going to change my clothes now.

Poor guy. He can’t even blame marrying me on his youth.

DD got an extra stamp for being the best following-instructions ballerina. She’s delighted.

SS’s girlfriend re-appeared.

I have strong feelings of I relate to that, when watching Californication. Not the fabulous body, getting laid all the time, and making tons of money part of course. The somehow I manage to leave a trail of destruction behind to bite me in the ass later part.

In all fairness, I have not really gotten into much trouble for the past ten years. It’s the trouble before that, things like forgotten out of state traffic tickets that crop up and ruin my well mannered days. And really, it’s not like I did something violent.

The stupid human tricks I usually do are things like dealing with an expired drivers license, and suspension, and trying to plan a trip and buying airfare, and getting a new phone all in the same week. And adding a bunch of plugins to the blog; and agreeing to write two more articles in two different languages. Like any one of those things all by itself would not have my task list struggling for air.

And now, Friday, and have tons of stuff to do. And DH will be golfing on Sunday. Ugh.

I was going to declare it a victory, or at least a draw if I could manage to pick up DD on time and cook dinner. I got her on time, but have ten pounds of half thawed chicken in the sink. If I had done what I intended and separated it into one pound batches and frozen it separately I would not have this mess. Such was the start of my week, setting it in the freezer and forgetting.

I didn’t get the mail out in time and am now greeted by legal notices for my grandmothers estate. More things in there for me to do, I’m sure.

I declare it the weekend and everything ignorable except the article I owe Tryhandmade. Anyway, I’ve already done the research and like writing that piece. It’s the optimist in me. I fantasize about saving an eczema sufferer from certain outbreak doom or maybe a tree.

Californication – Mia the Sociopath

I remember now that the other female character that really bothers me is Mia from Californication. Totally pathetic. Really, just move the story line along.

Other than Mia, played by Madeline Zima, I find the show really entertaining. Though I was disappointed to discover that I could only watch season one on Netflix and season two and three are not available.

Returning to my previous conversation about weak female characters, what is up with the social message that among women is this very overt needy freak who must manipulate men with her sexuality? Just yuk. I get her being sixteen and messing with Hanks head for an episode or two. But then we clearly enter the realm of poor mental health.

And speaking of poor mental health. Of course, I got sucked into watching the show because I wanted to see the fall of David Duchovny. Yes, I had to see the program that sent him to rehab for sex addiction. I like to think of it as curiousity, rather than total lack of altruism.
