* Cleaning House and Santa

Posted on December 12th, 2008 by decourlande. Filed under family, home.

It is time again for the semi-annual purge of household items.  A few weeks ago, under tremendous protest, I gave away a lot of toys and clothing that had belonged to DD.  Most of it was too small, or too young. But there was a big batch of things perfectly age appropriate for which we just don’t have room that went to mother-in-laws house.  DD can play with it tomorrow.

I have ready to go in the trunk and deliver tomorrow, many baby items for SIL, for her baby on the way.

I have a stack of magazines and books to deliver to a friend who is temporarily housebound.  Which is really scary, because I just brought a giant stack of magazines to MIL at Thanksgiving.

And I have a box each for Goodwill and the library.  Good grief.

On a funny note, I told DD that she needs to make room for her new toys that she will
receive as gifts and that Santa looks for clean rooms and sharing.  She
then polled her friends and quoted each of their responses to me.  Here are a couple:

DD: Mommy, my friends don’t have to give away their toys.
Me: Sure they do.
DD: No, B doesn’t give away her toys.  And they eat as many oreos as they want.
Me: B’s house is a mess.  And her mother is much fatter than yours.  Do you want to live in squalor with a really fat mom?
DD (frowns): No.  I don’t like that. E doesn’t give away her toys.
Me: E doesn’t celebrate Christmas.  Santa is going to fly right past her house.
DD: Why does Santa come down the chimney?
Me: Because the reindeer park on the roof.

wtf am I coming up with this stuff?  We also have been to the library this week and DD checked out a book about the food pyramid and vegetables.  Then we went to the doctor who talked about vegetables and health.  DD said on the way home, “I need to call B now and tell her about the vegetables and oreos so she won’t get fat.”

omfg, how to get her to understand that people cannot lecture their friends about vegetables and oreos.

* Table Linens

I found some tablecloths on sale.  It seems as though I have just purchased table linens.  But actually, the last time I purchased tablecloths was when we moved into our house - in 2000.

I was able to find a nice gold Provencal pattern.

* Home Alone

Posted on October 26th, 2008 by decourlande. Filed under home.

In a rare twist of fate, I have found myself home alone.  Ah, bliss.  I hear only the sound of my fingers pounding on the keyboard and the refrigerator.  I choose not to think about why the refrigerator makes noise (not now).

DH has taken the children out.  He used to take them to his mothers about once every four to six weeks.  But that was when he just worked a lot, rather than working every waking hour.  He did work today.  But somehow stepson has lured him away from his laptop with need of a haircut.  And DD has been dancing around with wild excitement that next week is her birthday.  So he took them out.

I was going to go.  But then I got smart and thought, oh my, home alone.  After they left I ate a sandwich and didn’t offer anyone a bite.

I watched mindless television; and no-one interrupted.

I paused the tv and vacuumed; and no-one asked to change the channel.

Oh YEAH.

* Swiss Garlic Press

Posted on October 11th, 2008 by decourlande. Filed under home.

Only people clever enough to keep Hitler from destroying their country could design a garlic press that can actually be cleaned. And there is the distinct possibility that I will not break it anytime soon.

Though that did not work out at all for the silicone measuring spoons, which I destroyed in only a week. (They were not Swiss. I have recycled them into a bubble blowing device for DD.)

At least I am hoping that the Swiss garlic mincing device will actually work.

Yes, I went out to a kitchen store today and gawked at all the gadgets as though they are porn. What could be better than gadgets designed to make food?

* Too Many Eggs

Posted on September 8th, 2008 by decourlande. Filed under home.

Last weekend I came home from the CSA very pleased to have organic eggs. Then I discovered that DH had already purchased a dozen organic eggs.

I decided my eggs are better, because I know exactly where they came from. Then we only cooked one or two of them over the week.

Saturday, in my CSA share… six more eggs. Now we have about 20 eggs, which is way too many.

And stale baguettes. And raisins and tart apples. That sounds like bread pudding to me. So thats what I made, bread pudding with organic eggs and organic apples.

The apples are not in the recipe. I just like them.

* Have I done something to anger the universe?

Posted on July 22nd, 2008 by decourlande. Filed under Pets, family, home, rant.

For the love of all that is good and holy, these small mammals must stop pooping in the house!

My child will be four years old this Fall and has been potty trained for two years. She just announced that she has pooped in her pants. wtf? Does she feel left out because the dog and cat messed?

Is this my punishment for being the large creature who is home alone this evening with the small creatures? Can’t they just pee on the other large creatures when they get home to show how much they’re missed?

* My dog is a menace

Posted on July 21st, 2008 by decourlande. Filed under Pets, home.

She was chewing everything. We hated to keep her in a crate all day. We let her out on the fenced porch. She chewed the porch, the toys, the outdoor furniture.

We had trained her to do her business in the grass and take her out every morning and evening. She immediately began using the porch for this. Back to the crate. Anytime she is free from the crate - potty on the porch

We purchased a tie-out for her. She is now digging holes in our yard.

I do not even know what to do. This dog is fed the best food, petted, played with, walked and vetted.

* Yes we will eat all this rice

Posted on June 8th, 2008 by decourlande. Filed under family, home.

People are always commenting on our rice purchases. The bagger at the grocery store said, “Wow. That’s a lot of rice!”

Yes, we really will eat all of this rice. And it won’t take us more than a month or two either. We aren’t much for potatoes.

* Yeah, I’m a Hottie

Posted on May 8th, 2008 by decourlande. Filed under family, home.

Not.

I hope that the boys have taken out the trash as I asked. If they also unloaded the dishwasher, that would be outstanding. But probably, that is setting my expectations too high.

I have an amazing evening planned of picking up DD, possibly stopping by grocery, feeding animals, and picking up mess at home. Then if I have time I can shred some documents and file some documents to get some mess out of my living room, created by a mad search for paperwork that we never did find. And of course, dishes.

I expect DD to spend a great deal of this time asking when Daddy and Bubba will be coming home and asking for juice or food while I try to accomplish any task not related to getting her juice or food.

Ack.

Seriously, she’s more work than my three year old.
