Californication – Mia the Sociopath

I remember now that the other female character that really bothers me is Mia from Californication.  Totally pathetic.  Really, just move the story line along.

“Californication” (2007)

Hank Moody… No man is more committed to a midlife crisis.

Other than Mia, played by Madeline Zima, I find the show really entertaining.  Though I was disappointed to discover that I could only watch season one on Netflix and season two and three are not available.

[Californication Mia and Hank]

Returning to my previous conversation about weak female characters, what is up with the social message that among women is this very overt needy freak who must manipulate men with her sexuality?  Just yuk.  I get her being sixteen and messing with Hanks head for an episode or two.  But then we clearly enter the realm of poor mental health.

And speaking of poor mental health.  Of course, I got sucked into watching the show because I wanted to see the fall of David Duchovny.  Yes, I had to see the program that sent him to rehab for sex addiction. I like to think of it as curiousity, rather than total lack of altruism.

Californication was not the fall of David Duchovny. What ever his problem was/is was there way before the series. In fact, David is doing just great. He got the help he needed and he and his wife are back together. I say good for the both of them.

Arlene, I do not mean to imply that David Duchovny has a life permanently ruined by his experiences, or that a television series could be entirely responsible. In fact, he and his issues are not the point here at all. I am simply amused that a program about a character who has a lot of sex has a sex addict as a star. How convenient.

Well, seeing as how season 2 just came out on DVD last week (I’m writing this in September) and season 3 hasn’t even started, I can see why you would have trouble getting it on Netflix.

Mia’s a great character. What don’t you like about her?
