Grandma was not a good secretary

My grandma filed things by flinging them into a neat little spot somewhere.  I am now the organizer of no less than six containers of paper.  It is arranged in no particular order.  Cheesy, anonymous, GOP campaign photos next to hand written notes from the president of Les Amis de Talleyrand and recipes culled from random publications, beside doctors appointment cards and tape.

They were mostly in neat little stacks in places where normal people keep wine chilling, or plants.

And envelopes.  Why do people do this?  In 2004, I helped my MIL organize her bills.  I know the date (unusual for me) because I was pregnant with DD.  She had this enormous stack of envelopes in her tote bag.  Just throwing away all the envelopes and junk flyers inside that she wasn’t using anyway reduced the pile by two thirds.  Seriously.  Throw that stuff away.

Oh, and there are crazy amounts of magazines.  I trade or give mine away.  It isn’t that I don’t enjoy reading them.  But one runs out of storage space.

Ack.  I am feeling claustrophobic just thinking about mountains of envelopes and magazines.  Although, I admit, my grandmother contained her piles of envelopes and magazines very well.  Once they are recycled, there will be some very nice homes for plants.

We keep our mail in a plastic bin in the pantry and go through it about once a month. And by we, I mean I shred the pile Jeff gives me.
