Grandmaman Loses Her Hair

Grandmaman called to tell me that her hair is falling out.

All of it.

Oh the joy of chemotherapy. I asked her is she upset. She said of course she is upset. She has always been proud of her hair!

I said, well, I didn’t know if she would be upset. When my mother’s hair fell out she (my mother) was not upset about it. I was really upset about it. But my mother was not. Thinking about it now, years later, the thought of my bald mother disturbs me tremendously.

So, Grandmaman is losing all of her hair. I asked if it is falling out in patches, or just thinning – in what way is it falling out? She said when she brushes her hair; the hair just comes out in great big gobs on the brush.

Yuk.

I am not happy about this. This is not good for her spirits. This is a woman who wanted her makeup in the emergency room.

It is hard. My grandmother had a few chemo treatments to make her more comfortable once we discovered she had terminal cancer. Once her hair started to thin, she said that was enough and she did not want to be a bald corpse. It was weird at the time, but we laugh about it now. (Now being 9 years since her death.) Watching the ups and downs of loved ones health is so difficult. We laughed as much as could. Maybe when they say laughter is the best medicine, maybe they meant for the family.

Oh God bless her. I’m not sure what’s worse…going through it or standing by helpless while someone you love does.

How does she feel about pretty scarves and hats? Would a new-hat-party cheer her up do you think, or just make it worse?

Sounds like a job for Une Tres Grande Boite des Chocolats.

In fact, I’ll go have one right now. [sigh]

With many prayers and well wishes to you (et en francais pour Grandmaman),

My mom’s hair is still thinning and she ended chemo at the beginning of June. She keeps says that she should have a wig made.
She has always had super thick hair and now it is about as thick as a normal persons hair. She still worries that she will go bald. I think this change bothers her more than any of the others.
I would like to think my mom has a nice head and would look just fine bald.
