Where should we put them then?
This is one of the books I read, while we were trying to decide where to go on vacation, Florida Beaches: The Best Places to Swim, Play, Eat, and Stay: Parke Puterbaugh, Alan Bisbort. The book was informative. After I read it I suggested we
stay outside of one of the metro areas so we would be near fun
activities, but not in the crowds. But not in Gulf County where we
actually ended up.
The authors are serious environmentalists. This is nice. But at the same time, I think they are harsh. They refer to Port St. Joe as biohazard, rather than a destination. The library and Piggly Wiggly are in Port St. Joe. I passed through it repeatedly. It does have a chemical plant, that gave off a noticeable odor a couple of times during our stay. But other than that, it was invisible to me. Maybe if I lived there I would know of problems with it. But I didn’t see any in the newspapers when I was in the area.
I often wonder where environmentalist would like to place things like chemical plants, nuclear power plants, and dumps. And where do communities want to put jails?
This has is the hot topic in my county. The county spends tremendous amounts of money to bus prisoners out of the county when there is plenty of land upon which to build a jail. But nobody wants it to be located near them. Sure, I would not want the jail right next to me either. But I live directly next to a school. No sane person would locate a jail next to a school. Also, there is no available land in that spot.
And as I look for a link to the story about the jail debacle, I see yet another jail building proposal. I believe this is the third one. But it could be the second or the fourth.
