Bill Bryson has distorted my view of the beach

Bill Bryson has distorted my view of the beach.

Ever since I read In a Sunburned Country, I can’t think of the beach without thinking of all the things that live in and near the ocean that might kill me. The book is about Australia. But it’s still the beach.

It is ridiculous of course to have developed this thought pattern, since so many people a) live in Australia and b) live near beaches all over the world and c) I have been to many beaches and am still alive.

A huge percentage of accidents happen within a couple of miles from home. Therefore, I think you are safe at the beach . . . unless you have a beach house. Then you are hosed.
